Agentic commerce means AI agents shop for your customers. Here's what it is, what Google and Shopify launched this fall, and a 30-day prep plan for owners.

Agentic commerce is the idea that AI agents will research, compare and sometimes buy products for people. It sounded far off a year ago. This fall it's showing up in real products, right before the busiest shopping weeks of the year. If you sell online, or even if customers just find you online, it's worth an hour of your attention now.
This guide explains what agentic commerce means in plain terms, what changed this month, and a 30-day plan to get your business ready without overspending.
What is agentic commerce?
Today a shopper searches, clicks around, reads reviews and checks out. In agentic commerce, the shopper asks an AI assistant to do some or all of that. "Find me a waterproof jacket under $150 that ships by Friday." The agent searches, compares options and either shows a short list or, with permission, completes the purchase.
For your business, that means a new kind of visitor. Sometimes it isn't a person browsing your site. It's software reading your product data and deciding whether you make the short list.
Why agentic commerce matters this holiday season
Two things happened recently that make this real.
First, Shopify published a report calling this "the first holiday season of the agentic era." Its survey found 65% of shoppers say they'll use AI for at least one shopping task this season. But trust is the brake: only about one-third said they trust an agent to actually make a purchase for them.
Second, Google is building checkout plumbing for agents. Search Engine Land reports that Google rolled out a Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) integration hub inside Merchant Center in the US. It covers things like cart transfer, native checkout and identity linking, the pieces an AI agent needs to move a shopper from "show me options" to "buy it."
Put simply: most shoppers will use AI to research this season, and fewer will let it buy. So the near-term win is being the business the agent recommends.
What AI shopping agents look at
Agents can't see your beautiful photos the way a person does. They read data. That means a few unglamorous things matter a lot:
- Clear product titles and descriptions. "Women's waterproof hiking jacket, packable, sizes XS to 3X" beats "The Summit."
- Accurate price and stock. If your feed says in stock and your site says sold out, you lose trust fast.
- Shipping and return details. "Ships by" dates and return windows are exactly what a holiday shopper asks about.
- Reviews and ratings. Agents summarize them. A few recent, detailed reviews go a long way.
- Structured data. Product markup on your pages and a clean Google Merchant Center feed help machines read you correctly.
A 30-day agentic commerce prep plan
You don't need to rebuild anything. Here's a focused plan for the next month.
Week 1: Fix your product data
Pick your top 20 products by revenue. Rewrite titles and descriptions so a stranger could understand exactly what each one is, who it's for and why it's different. AI can draft these fast. A person should review every one.
Week 2: Clean up Merchant Center
If you sell physical products, log in to Google Merchant Center. Fix feed errors. Check that prices, stock and shipping match your site. Then look at whether the new UCP integration options apply to your platform. Many store platforms handle this for you, so check with yours before hiring anyone.
Week 3: Answer the questions agents get asked
Add a short FAQ to your best product pages: sizing, materials, delivery dates, returns, gift options. These are the questions shoppers type into AI assistants. If the answer is on your page, the agent can use it.
Week 4: Test it yourself
Open ChatGPT, Gemini or another assistant and ask it to find a product like yours. Do you show up? What does it say about you? Is anything wrong? Write it down and fix the source. Repeat after a week.
What about service businesses?
Agentic commerce isn't only about online stores. Assistants also help people pick a plumber, a dentist or a detailer. The same rules apply: clear services, prices or price ranges where you can share them, hours, service area and real reviews. Make sure the basics are correct everywhere you're listed.
And be ready for the lead when it arrives. An AI-sent customer who waits a day for a reply goes to the next name on the list. If your follow-up is slow, start there. We wrote a guide to automating lead follow-up.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying an "AI shopping" tool before fixing your data. Bad data in a fancy tool is still bad data.
- Letting AI write product pages with no review. Wrong sizes or materials will cost you returns and reviews.
- Ignoring trust. Since most shoppers don't yet trust agents to buy, your reviews, return policy and contact details carry even more weight.
- Promising delivery dates you can't hit. Agents and shoppers both check.

Common questions
Do I need to do anything for agentic commerce this year? You don't need a big project. Clean product data, accurate feeds and clear FAQs help with regular search and AI agents at the same time.
Will AI agents replace my website? Not this season. Shopify's survey shows most shoppers still don't trust agents to complete purchases. Your site still closes the sale.
Is the Google UCP hub available to me? Search Engine Land reported a US rollout in Merchant Center. Check your Merchant Center account and your store platform for availability.
