AI Max for Search is now the default direction for Google Ads Search campaigns, and if you run ads for your business, your account may have changed in September without you touching anything. Google automatically moved campaigns using some older features into AI Max during the month. Heading into the holiday season, that's worth a 30-minute review. Here's what changed, what to check, and how to keep spend tied to real results.
What is AI Max for Search?
AI Max is a set of Google features for Search campaigns that uses Google's AI to match your ads to more searches, adjust ad text, and pick landing pages from your site. You turn it on at the campaign level. Google's AI Max help page explains the settings and controls in detail.
The idea is simple: instead of you guessing every keyword, Google reads your site and ads and finds more searches where you might be relevant. The risk is just as simple: "more searches" can mean more wasted spend if nobody is watching.
What changed in September
According to Search Engine Land's August 14 report, Google set this timeline:
- August 3, 2026: no new Campaign-level Broad Match or legacy Automatically Created Assets (ACA) setups.
- September 1 to 30, 2026: Search campaigns using Campaign-level Broad Match or standalone ACA were automatically upgraded to AI Max, in place, with equivalent settings. Brand inclusions and exclusions carried over.
- January 15, 2027: reminder notices for advertisers still using Dynamic Search Ads (DSA).
- February 2027: DSA campaigns automatically migrate, and new DSA ad groups can't be created.
So if your account used any of those features, it's likely running AI Max now.
Why AI Max for Search matters before the holidays
Holiday weeks are when search volume and competition jump. An AI-driven setting that expands where your ads show can be great in Q4, or it can quietly spend your budget on searches that never buy. The difference is whether you check.
Small accounts feel this most. A national brand can absorb some waste. A founder-led business with a few thousand dollars a month in ads can't.
Your 30-minute AI Max check
Do this once now and again in December.
1. Find out which campaigns changed
Open each Search campaign and look at its settings. Note which ones now show AI Max. Write down the date of the change so you can compare before and after.
2. Read the search terms report
This is the most important step. Look at the actual searches that triggered your ads in the last 30 days. Are they people who would buy from you? Flag anything off-topic, like job seekers, "free" searches or competitors you don't want.
3. Add negative keywords
Block the irrelevant searches you found. This is still one of the most effective ways to protect your budget.
4. Check your landing pages
AI Max can send people to different pages on your site. Make sure it isn't sending ad clicks to your careers page, an old blog post or a sold-out product. If a page shouldn't receive ad traffic, use the URL controls Google provides.
5. Review brand settings
If you sell well-known brands or want to avoid them, confirm your brand inclusions and exclusions carried over correctly.
6. Compare cost per lead or sale
Look at cost per lead or cost per sale in September versus August. If it went up and quality went down, adjust or ask for help. If it went down, great. Keep watching.
A quick example of what to look for
Say you run a home cleaning company and bid on "house cleaning service." After AI Max, your search terms report might show your ads appearing for searches like "house cleaning jobs near me," "how to clean a house fast" or "cleaning supplies wholesale." None of those people want to hire you. Each click costs money anyway.
Now picture the good matches too, like "move out cleaning this weekend" or "deep clean before holiday guests." Those may be searches you never thought to add as keywords. That's the real promise of AI Max: finding buyers you missed. Your job is to keep the good matches and block the rest, every few weeks, especially in November and December.
Make sure tracking is right first
None of this works without good conversion tracking. If Google is optimizing toward form fills that are mostly spam, AI Max will happily find you more spam. Before trusting any AI-driven ad setting:
- Confirm conversions are firing on real leads or sales.
- Import offline sales or booked jobs if you can.
- Remove junk conversions like "page view" as a goal.
We wrote about setting up honest tracking in pay for performance marketing. The same principles apply whether you pay an agency, a partner or run ads yourself.
Plan for the DSA change in February
If you use Dynamic Search Ads, you have a few months. Don't wait for the February switch. Test AI Max on one campaign in January with your best tracking in place, compare it with your DSA results, and decide on your own terms.
Common questions
Do I have to use AI Max for Search? Google is retiring the legacy features it replaces. Campaigns using Campaign-level Broad Match or ACA were migrated in September, and DSA follows in February 2027.
Will AI Max raise my costs? It can expand where your ads show. Whether that raises cost per result depends on your tracking, negatives and budget settings. Check your search terms report.
Can I still use regular keywords? Yes. AI Max works alongside your keywords. Keep your best-performing ones and add negatives for waste.
What if I don't have time for this? Then make sure whoever runs your ads walks you through the search terms report and cost per lead every month.
Getting help without another retainer
Many owners pay an agency every month whether ads work or not. We compared models in growth partner vs. marketing agency. AI Answered is a growth partner for founder-led businesses: we tie our work to a number you can see, like cost per booked job or tracked revenue.
