If typing on a phone feels slow or fiddly, you can skip it. ChatGPT has a voice mode that lets you talk to it out loud and hear it answer back, a lot like a phone call. This is ChatGPT voice mode for beginners: what it is, how to start it, what to say, and when to stay careful. If you can tap one button and speak a sentence, you can use it.

Before you start, you'll need the ChatGPT app on your phone and an account. If you haven't done that yet, follow our walk-through on your first 10 minutes with ChatGPT first, then come back here.

A quick word on who's writing. I'm Andy from AI Answered, and I co-wrote AI for Boomers with Noah. This is the walk-through I'd give a friend who'd rather talk than type.

What ChatGPT voice mode is

Voice mode is a way to have a spoken back-and-forth with ChatGPT. You talk. It listens, then answers in a natural-sounding voice. You can interrupt, ask a follow-up, or say "can you repeat that more slowly?" just like you would with a person.

A few things people like about it:

  • No typing. Great if your fingers don't love the tiny keyboard, or your eyes get tired reading small text.
  • Hands free. You can ask a question while you're cooking, folding laundry or looking at a plant you're trying to name.
  • It feels natural. You don't have to phrase things a special way. Talk like you'd talk to a helpful neighbor.

After you finish, the conversation shows up as text in your chat history, so you can read it again later. That's handy for recipes or lists.

ChatGPT voice mode for beginners: how to start

The buttons move around a little as the app gets updated, but the steps stay about the same. OpenAI keeps an up-to-date help page on voice mode if anything looks different on your screen.

Step 1: Open the ChatGPT app

Tap the ChatGPT icon on your phone. Make sure you're signed in. You'll see the box at the bottom where you'd normally type.

Step 2: Tap the voice button

Look in the message bar at the bottom of the screen for the voice icon. On most phones it looks like a small set of sound waves. Tap it.

A small microphone icon nearby does something different: it turns your speech into typed text, and you still have to press send. The voice button is the one that starts a real spoken conversation.

Step 3: Allow the microphone

The first time, your phone will ask if ChatGPT can use the microphone. Tap Allow. It can't hear you without it.

Step 4: Pick a voice

You may be asked to choose a voice. Listen to a few and pick one you can hear clearly. You can change it later in settings.

Step 5: Start talking

Say something simple, like "Hi, I'm new to this. Can you talk a little slower?" Wait a second after you finish speaking. It will answer out loud.

Step 6: End the conversation

When you're done, tap the X or exit button on the screen. That ends the voice chat and puts the written version in your history.

Good first things to ask out loud

The best way to get comfortable is to ask something low-stakes. Here are some ideas that fit everyday life.

  • "What can I make for dinner with chicken, rice and a can of tomatoes?"
  • "Help me make a grocery list for the week. I'll tell you what I need."
  • "Remind me how to take a screenshot on my iPhone."
  • "My granddaughter plays volleyball. Explain the basic rules so I can follow her game."
  • "I'm writing a birthday note to my brother. Help me think of something warm to say."
  • "Tell me a little about the history of the town I grew up in."

Dinner ideas and grocery lists like these are a big part of how our book helps simplify the day, and voice mode makes them even easier.

You can also practice. Some people use voice mode to brush up on a language before a trip, or to rehearse what they want to say on a hard phone call.

Tips that make voice mode easier

A few small habits make a big difference.

  • Find a quiet spot. TV noise and other voices can confuse it. It may think you're still talking.
  • Pause when you're done. It waits for a short silence before answering. If it cuts you off, just keep talking or tap the screen.
  • Ask it to slow down. Say "Please speak more slowly" or "Use shorter answers." It will adjust.
  • Ask it to repeat. "Say that again" works fine. So does "Can you give me just the first step?"
  • Read it back later. For anything with numbers, like a recipe or directions, open the chat afterward and read the text version.

On the free plan, voice time is limited, and the limits change from time to time. If it stops partway through, that's usually why. Your typed chat still works.

What to keep private when you talk to ChatGPT

Talking out loud feels casual, and that makes it easy to say more than you meant to. The same rules from the book apply here.

  • Keep private info private. Don't say your Social Security number, bank account numbers, card numbers, Medicare number or passwords. ChatGPT doesn't need them for anything.
  • Remember it's saved. Your voice chats become part of your chat history, and OpenAI says the audio is kept for a period of time. Talk as if you're writing it down.
  • Check what matters. ChatGPT can sound very sure and still be wrong. For health, money or legal questions, use it to understand the topic, then confirm with a real person you trust.
  • Slow down when someone rushes you. ChatGPT will never call you. If someone phones claiming to be "ChatGPT support" or any AI company, hang up. We explain that kind of scam in our post on AI scam calls.

If you run a small business, or a family member does, the same keep-it-private rule applies to the whole team, and our AI safety basics for business owners post shows how.

Common questions

Is voice mode free?

Free accounts get some voice time with limits. Paid plans get more. The details change, so check the app or OpenAI's help page for the current rules.

Can I use voice mode on my computer?

Yes. On ChatGPT.com, look for the voice icon in the box where you type. Your computer will need a microphone, which most laptops have built in.

Does ChatGPT listen all the time?

No. It only listens while voice mode is open. When you tap the exit button, the conversation ends.

What if it misunderstands me?

Just say "That's not what I meant" and try again in different words. You can also switch back to typing any time. Nothing breaks if you get it wrong.

Is it the same as Siri or Alexa?

Similar idea, different strengths. Siri and Alexa are good for quick commands like timers. ChatGPT voice mode is better for longer conversations, explanations and brainstorming.

Take it one conversation at a time

You don't have to master voice mode in a day. Try one short chat a day this week. Ask about dinner, the weather in a place you're visiting, or how to do something on your phone. By Friday it will feel normal.
