Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026, and it's your yearly chance to compare Medicare plans 2027 and switch if something better fits. The official tool for that is the Medicare Plan Finder on Medicare.gov. ChatGPT can't replace it, but it can make the process a lot less overwhelming. It can explain confusing terms, turn a plan's fine print into plain English, and help you build a short list of questions before you call anyone.
The one rule: you never need to give ChatGPT your Medicare number, Social Security number, or date of birth to do any of this.
What's changing for 2027
Here's what the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said ahead of this year's enrollment period. In its 2027 outlook, CMS projected:
- The average monthly Medicare Advantage premium falling from $14.37 in 2026 to $12.00 in 2027.
- The average stand-alone Part D drug plan premium rising less than $1 a month, from $35.09 to $36.
- About 97% of people with Medicare having access to 10 or more Medicare Advantage plans.
- About eight in ten Medicare Advantage members being able to stay in their current plan with the same or a lower premium.
Those are averages. Your plan could change more or less than that, and that's exactly why it's worth checking. CMS also says the Plan Finder now shows clearer messages about changes affecting your current plan in 2027, plus easier links to each plan's drug list and Summary of Benefits.
Step 1: Gather your own list first
Before you open anything, write down three things on paper:
- Every prescription you take, with the dose and how often.
- Your doctors and pharmacy, the ones you don't want to give up.
- What matters most to you this year. Lower premiums? Dental and vision? Traveling out of state? Fewer surprise bills?
This list is your compass. Every plan you look at either fits it or doesn't.
Step 2: Compare Medicare plans 2027 in the Plan Finder
Go directly to Medicare.gov by typing it into your browser. Don't click a search ad to get there. The FTC warned this month that scammers buy ads at the top of search results and build sites that look like the real thing, as Newsweek reported. Look for ".gov" in the address bar.
In the Plan Finder, you can enter your drugs and pharmacy and see estimated costs for each plan in your area. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE any time, day or night, and someone will walk you through it.
Pick two or three plans that look promising. For each one, open the Summary of Benefits.
Step 3: Let ChatGPT translate the fine print
This is where ChatGPT earns its keep. Copy a section of a plan's Summary of Benefits and paste it in with a request like:
Explain this section in plain English. What would I pay for a specialist visit, and is there a deductible first?
Or, to understand terms:
What's the difference between a copay, coinsurance, and a deductible? Use a simple example with a $200 doctor visit.
What does "prior authorization" mean in a Medicare Advantage plan, and why does it matter?
What's the difference between an HMO and a PPO Medicare Advantage plan?
You can paste in sections from two plans and ask ChatGPT to put them side by side:
Here are the dental benefits from Plan A and Plan B. Make a simple table comparing them.
Just be sure you're pasting the plan's public document, not anything with your name or ID number on it.
Step 4: Build your questions before you call
Once you've narrowed it down, ask ChatGPT to help you prepare:
I'm comparing two Medicare Advantage plans. I take three prescriptions and see a cardiologist twice a year. Write me a list of 8 questions to ask the plan or a counselor before I decide.
You'll get questions like whether your cardiologist is in network, what happens if you need care while traveling, and whether your drugs need prior approval. Print the list. Bring it to your call.
Free, unbiased help is also available through your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). Counselors there don't sell plans. It's worth a call if you want a person to double-check your choice.
Step 5: Double-check anything ChatGPT tells you
ChatGPT is great at explaining. It is not a source of truth for your specific plan's prices. It can be out of date, and it can be wrong. So:
- Use ChatGPT to understand terms and organize your thinking.
- Use the Plan Finder, the plan's own documents, 1-800-MEDICARE, or a SHIP counselor for actual costs and coverage.
- If ChatGPT and the official document disagree, the official document wins.
This is the same habit I recommend when you use AI to get ready for a doctor visit. Our guide to questions to ask your doctor with AI works the same way: AI helps you prepare, and the professional gives the answer.
What never to share during Open Enrollment
Keep these out of ChatGPT and away from anyone who calls you out of the blue:
- Your Medicare number
- Your Social Security number
- Bank or card details
- Your date of birth paired with your full name
Medicare won't call you unexpectedly to sell you a plan. If someone calls claiming to be from Medicare and asks for your number, hang up and call 1-800-MEDICARE yourself. We cover the most common tricks in our post on Medicare Open Enrollment scams.
A sample conversation you can copy
I'm 71 and have Original Medicare with a Part D plan. My premium for 2027 is going up. Explain, in simple terms, my main options during Open Enrollment and what I should check before switching. Don't ask for my personal information.
That last sentence is a good habit. It reminds you, and the chat, that personal details don't belong there.
Common questions
When can I compare Medicare plans for 2027? Open Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, 2026. Changes you make start January 1, 2027.
Do I have to re-enroll if I'm happy with my plan? CMS says people who want to keep their current coverage generally don't need to re-enroll. It's still smart to check the changes to your plan for next year.
Is ChatGPT accurate about Medicare? It's good for explaining general terms. For your exact costs and coverage, always confirm with Medicare.gov, the plan, or a SHIP counselor.
Can ChatGPT enroll me in a plan? No, and you shouldn't want it to. Enroll through Medicare.gov, by calling 1-800-MEDICARE, or directly with the plan.
