How to Ask ChatGPT Better Questions (Prompting Basics)

Getting great answers from ChatGPT depends on how you ask the question. If you ask a vague question, you get a vague answer. By adding a little more detail—like context or specific instructions—you can turn okay answers into amazing ones. In the tech world, this is called "prompting," but it's really just clear communication.

Give It a Role One of the best tricks is to tell ChatGPT who it should pretend to be. This helps it understand the "tone" you want.

Instead of asking "How do I fix a leaky faucet?", try asking: "You are a professional plumber with 20 years of experience. Explain how to fix a leaky faucet to someone who has never used tools before." The second version will give you a much simpler, more patient, and safer explanation.

Be Specific About Length and Format You can tell ChatGPT exactly how you want the information to look. This saves you from reading walls of text.

If you need a summary, add "in three sentences" to your request. If you need instructions, add "give me a numbered list." For example: "Give me 5 ideas for a low-sugar dessert, presented as a bulleted list." This forces the AI to be organized and concise, making it easier for you to read.

The "Do Over" Rule The biggest mistake beginners make is stopping after one question. If the answer isn't right, talk back to it!

If ChatGPT uses words that are too big, type: "Explain that again simply." If it missed a detail, type: "You forgot to mention I don't have an oven." You are having a conversation, not a one-way search. Correcting the AI is how you get the best results.
