AI Consulting Cost in 2026: What Firms Actually Publish

What AI consulting cost looks like in 2026, using prices firms publish on their own sites, plus what each tier buys and the questions to ask first.

AI consulting cost is one of the most searched questions from founders right now, and one of the hardest to get a straight answer on. Most firms say "contact us." A few publish real numbers. This post pulls together what those firms say on their own sites, explains what each price tier usually buys, and gives you the questions that keep you from overpaying.

A quick note before the numbers. Prices change. Everything below is what each company's public page said when I checked it in October 2026. Confirm it on a call before you sign anything.

The short answer on AI consulting cost

For a small business, published prices cluster in three bands:

  • A written plan or assessment: roughly $500 to $3,500
  • One workflow built and handed over: roughly $1,500 to $8,000
  • A bigger build or multi-person rollout: roughly $7,500 to $15,000 and up

Monthly support, when a firm offers it, tends to start around $1,200 to $1,500 a month in the published examples below. Hourly rates run widest of all.

Those ranges come from the firms below. None of them are endorsements. They're here because they put prices in writing, which is more than most.

What four firms publish

Cognio Labs

Cognio's small business guide says AI consulting for a company under about 50 people runs between $1,500 and $15,000. It breaks that into a written roadmap ($500 to $3,000 across the market), one workflow scoped, built and handed over ($1,500 to $7,000), and a production build with acceptance criteria ($8,000 to $15,000). It also notes buyers report quotes from $3,000 to $32,000 for near-identical scopes. Cognio sells consulting itself and says so at the top of the guide, which I appreciate.

East Coast AI Partners

East Coast AI Partners publishes market ranges of $100 to $450 an hour, $2,500 to $15,000 for projects, and $1,000 to $25,000 a month for retainers. Its own prices are listed too: $1,500 once for a "Proof Build," one working system live in fourteen days and refundable if it isn't, then $1,500 a month for ongoing work. It also cites a 2026 survey of 942 US small business owners that found only about 10% spend $250 or more a month on AI.

Strategized.ai

Strategized.ai's cost breakdown, updated October 15, 2026, puts independent AI consultants at $150 to $350 an hour based on published US guides. Its own fixed prices: a written build plan for $2,500, a 14-day implementation sprint from $2,997, a team setup from $7,500, and a support plan from $1,200 a month. Its stated view is that hourly billing is the most expensive way for a small business to buy AI help because the owner carries the scope risk.

AI Answered (us)

Since we're the ones writing this, here's our entry, plainly. AI Answered doesn't publish a price list, because what you pay ties to a result we agree on before we build. You either pay a one-time fee once a defined result is tracked, or you share the tracked value on a longer partnership. We don't do retainers with fuzzy value. That model fits founder-led businesses that already have customers and want growth they can see in their own numbers. It's a worse fit if you want a fixed-price deliverable with no tie to outcomes, and in that case one of the firms above may suit you better.

If you're local, our Cincinnati AI consulting page explains how that works for businesses in greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

What each price tier usually buys

The plan ($500 to $3,500). Someone maps how your business runs, finds the repeat work, and tells you what's worth building. The good version ends with a ranked list and a clear "build this, skip that." The bad version ends with a slide deck about AI in your industry. Ask to see a sample deliverable before you pay.

One workflow ($1,500 to $8,000). One process, built and working. Lead follow-up, quote drafting, intake forms, a reporting dashboard. This is where most small businesses should start. You find out quickly whether the consultant can ship and whether your team will use it.

The bigger build ($7,500 to $15,000 and up). Several workflows, more people, more systems connected. Do this after a smaller win, not before.

Monthly support. Useful once something is built and running. Paying a monthly fee before anything exists is how owners end up with a retainer and no result.

Why quotes vary so much

Two businesses can ask for "an AI chatbot" and get quotes $20,000 apart. The usual reasons:

  • Scope that isn't written down. "Help us with AI" can mean anything. A one-page scope with a finish line narrows the price fast.
  • Who's doing the work. A senior operator costs more than a junior team, and sometimes that's worth it.
  • Messy data. If your customer info lives in five places, someone has to clean it up first.
  • Who carries the risk. Hourly billing puts the risk on you. Fixed fees put it on the consultant. Pay-on-results models put it on the consultant too, but usually ask for more upside.

How to know the price is worth it

Before you compare quotes, decide what the project should return. AI consulting is worth it when it does one of two things:

  1. Saves hours you'd otherwise pay for. If a tool saves your office manager eight hours a week, you can put a dollar figure on that.
  2. Brings in revenue you're losing now. Slow follow-up, missed calls, quotes that never go out.

If a consultant can't tie the project to one of those with a number, that's your signal to slow down. Our guide to pay for performance marketing covers how to define tracked results before you sign, and the same thinking applies to AI work.

Questions to ask any AI consultant

  • What exactly will be working when you're done, and how will we both know?
  • What's the smallest version of this we could start with?
  • Who owns the accounts, code, and data if we stop working together?
  • What will the tools cost us each month after you leave?
  • Can I see something you built that's still running?
  • What would you tell us not to do?

A good consultant will try to make your first project smaller, not bigger.

Red flags

  • A monthly fee before anything is built
  • "Transformation" language with no specific workflow named
  • No written scope or finish line
  • They host everything and you can't get access
  • They can't say what your team will do differently on Monday

Common questions

What is a typical AI consulting cost for a small business? Based on the published prices above, most small businesses can start with one workflow in the $1,500 to $8,000 range. Plans and assessments can be cheaper. Big rollouts cost more.

Is hourly or fixed-fee better? For a first project, fixed-fee or pay-on-results usually protects you better, because the consultant carries the risk of the work running long.

Do I need an AI consultant at all? Not always. If your team already has clear processes and someone curious enough to learn the tools, start there. Bring in help when you know which problem you want solved and don't have the hours to solve it.

How is a growth partner different from an AI consultant? An AI consultant usually builds or advises on AI. A growth partner owns a business result, like more booked customers, and uses AI as one of the tools. See how our partnerships work.
