How to Get Cited in Google AI Overviews: A Small Business Plan
Google just changed how AI answers link to sites. A plain plan to get cited in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, based on Google's own guidance.

If you want to get cited in Google AI Overviews, the good news is that Google has told site owners exactly what it looks for, and it isn't a secret trick. The other news is that the citations themselves just got more valuable. On October 15, Google announced it will show more inline links in AI Mode and AI Overviews, place them higher in responses more often, and test a dedicated section at the top of some answers for the one or two official sites that complete a task.
For a small business, that's a real opening. Here's what changed, what Google says it takes to be a source, and a plan you can work through this month.
What Google changed on October 15
In its AI Mode and AI Overviews update, Google listed five changes. The ones that matter most for a business website:
- More inline links. Links embedded right in the words of an AI answer, shown higher up and more often.
- A section for official sites. Google is testing a display that surfaces the one or two official places to complete a task, with context on why each link is useful.
- More prominent related links. Links at the end of some AI answers get image thumbnails and a more clickable design.
Google also said the number of people using its Preferred Sources feature has grown more than 7x since the start of the year. People are choosing which sites they want to see. That rewards businesses with a clear identity and pages people actually trust.
What it takes to get cited in Google AI Overviews
Google's own documentation, AI features and your website, is refreshingly direct. To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements.
It then lists the fundamentals that still matter:
- Crawling allowed in robots.txt and by your hosting or CDN
- Content that's easy to find through internal links on your site
- Important content available as text, not trapped in images
- Good images and video supporting the text where it helps
- Structured data that matches what's visible on the page
- An up-to-date Business Profile and Merchant Center listing if you have them
Google also notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode can use "query fan-out," running several related searches across subtopics to build an answer. That means a page that clearly answers one specific sub-question can get pulled in even if it doesn't rank first for the main search.
A 30-day plan for a small business
Week 1: Make sure Google can see you
- Verify your site in Google Search Console if you haven't.
- Check that your key pages are indexed. Use the URL Inspection tool on your homepage, your main service page, and your best how-to page.
- Make sure your sitemap is submitted and up to date.
- If you serve a local area, claim and fill out your Google Business Profile.
None of this is glamorous. All of it is required. A page that isn't indexed can't be cited.
Week 2: Answer the exact questions your buyers ask
Look at the Queries report in Search Console. You'll see the real words people type before they find you. Pick five questions you can answer better than anyone.
For each one, write a section that answers it in the first two sentences, then explains. Put the question in a heading. AI answers love a clean, direct response near the top.
Specific beats broad. "How much does a mobile detail cost in Cincinnati" is more citable than "Car care tips."
Week 3: Prove you're the real thing
Google is testing a section for "official" sites. You can't apply for that, but you can make it obvious who you are:
- One clear name for your business, used the same way everywhere
- An About page with real people, real locations served, and how to reach you
- Case studies or examples with specific, honest results
- Structured data for your organization and services that matches the page
We went through this on a regulated-industry client's site. The technical basics were already strong, scoring 100/100 and 98/100 on-page, and the real gaps were proof, conversion paths, and local landing pages. You can read that in our BIT USA case study. Most small business sites are the same: the plumbing is fine, the proof is thin.
Week 4: Track what happens
Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the regular Search Console Performance report, under the "Web" search type. So keep an eye on impressions and clicks for the pages you improved.
Then connect that to money. Clicks are nice. Booked calls and sales are the point. Our guide on how to track marketing ROI shows a simple way to tie search traffic to revenue when you're the one running the business.
What not to waste time on
- Tricks and hidden text. Google says pages still have to follow its Search policies.
- Chasing every AI tool at once. Get Google right first. The fundamentals carry over.
- Thin pages written only for AI. Google's guidance points to helpful, reliable, people-first content. If a human wouldn't find the page useful, an AI answer won't either.
- Blocking Googlebot to "protect" content. If Google can't crawl it, it can't cite it.
Where a growth partner fits
You can do most of this yourself with a few focused hours a week. Where outside help pays off is connecting search work to sales: making sure the people who click actually book, buy, or call. That's the part most SEO reports skip.
That's how we work at AI Answered. We agree the number first, like booked calls from search, and what you pay ties to results you can see. If you'd rather keep SEO in-house, the plan above is a solid place to start.
Common questions
Can I pay to get cited in Google AI Overviews? Google's guidance describes supporting links as pages from its index that meet the normal Search requirements. It doesn't describe any paid way to become a cited source.
Do I need special code or markup to appear in AI Overviews? Google says there are no additional technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Structured data helps when it matches the visible page.
How do I know if my site is being cited? Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the Web Performance report. Watch impressions and clicks on the pages you've improved.
How long does it take? New pages on a healthy site can get indexed within days. Getting cited depends on how well the page answers the question compared to everyone else.
