ChatGPT Meetings Plugin for Sales Calls: Make Follow-Up Happen
The ChatGPT Meetings plugin takes notes and suggests next steps after calls. How to use it on sales calls, where it falls short, and the consent rule to know.

OpenAI just launched the ChatGPT Meetings plugin, and if you run sales calls yourself, it's worth a look. It listens to a call, writes notes, and suggests next steps like drafting a follow-up email. No bot joins the meeting. For founders who close their own deals, that last part matters, because the thing that kills most deals isn't the call. It's what happens (or doesn't) after.
This post covers what the plugin does, who can use it today, how I'd set it up for sales calls, the consent rule you can't skip, and how it compares to the note-takers you might already use.
What the ChatGPT Meetings plugin does
According to Cult of Mac's write-up, the Meetings plugin turns the ChatGPT Mac app into a meeting assistant. It works on online calls and in-person conversations. It captures the conversation, then gives you a personalized summary and suggested action items.
A few details from that report and from News9's breakdown of availability and limits:
- It's in beta for ChatGPT Pro and Business users. Enterprise access is limited to an early program.
- Mac only for now. Windows, iPhone and Android support is planned, with no confirmed date.
- No visible bot joins your Zoom or Google Meet call.
- Summaries pull in context. It combines the transcript, your own notes and information from apps you've connected.
- It can act on the notes. You can ask it to draft a follow-up email or update a project plan. You review and edit before it starts.
- Notes live in ChatGPT Space. Pages are private by default. If you share one, the other person sees the notes, not the transcript.
- Audio is deleted after processing. OpenAI says the audio is removed from your Mac and its servers once your notes are ready, and it can't be replayed.
- Sessions stop on their own after four hours, when you close the laptop lid, or after a long stretch without audio.
Cult of Mac frames it as a direct competitor to Granola and other AI note-takers on the Mac.
The consent rule you can't skip
This is the part people will get wrong.
News9 reports that OpenAI tells users to inform everyone and get consent before recording. The reminder shows up only for the person using the plugin. It does not alert the other people on the call or collect their permission for you.
So you have to say it out loud. Something like: "Mind if I use an AI note-taker so I can pay attention instead of scribbling? I'll send you the notes after." Most buyers say yes. Some won't, and that's their call.
Recording laws vary by state, and some require everyone on the call to agree. If you sell across state lines, assume you need everyone's consent and get it at the top of every call. When in doubt, ask your attorney. This takes ten seconds and saves you a real headache.
How to set up the ChatGPT Meetings plugin for sales calls
Here's how I'd use it if I were running discovery and closing calls myself.
Before the call
Connect your calendar (Google Calendar or Outlook) so you get reminders. Then write two or three lines in your own notes: who the buyer is, what they said on the last call, and what you want to leave with. The plugin uses your notes as context, so this makes the summary sharper.
During the call
Get consent at the start. Then forget about the tool and listen. The whole point is that you stop typing while the buyer is talking.
Right after the call
This is where the money is. Ask ChatGPT for three things while it's fresh:
- "Draft a follow-up email that recaps what they told me, the problem in their words, and the next step we agreed on."
- "List every objection or concern they raised."
- "What did I say I'd send them, and by when?"
Read the draft. Fix anything that's off. Send it within the hour. News9 notes OpenAI's own advice to review important details before relying on or sharing the notes, since the plugin can miss parts of a conversation if audio permissions aren't set right.
The next morning
Put the next touch on your calendar. A follow-up email is great. A follow-up email plus a reminder to call on day three is how deals actually close. We wrote a whole guide on automating lead follow-up if you want a system around this.
Where the plugin falls short for sales teams
It's a good tool. It's not a sales system. A few gaps to know:
It's personal, not team-wide. Meeting pages are private by default. If you have a partner or rep, you'll need a habit of sharing the right notes.
It doesn't update your CRM by itself. Unless you've connected the right apps and asked it to, your pipeline won't change. Somebody still has to log the deal stage.
Mac only, for now. If half your team is on Windows, you'll wait or use something else.
Beta means rough edges. Expect changes.
It won't fix a weak process. If you don't have a clear next step at the end of every call, better notes will just document that you didn't have one.
How it compares to other note-takers
You probably already know tools like Granola, Fathom, Otter or the built-in recorders in Zoom and Google Meet. The honest comparison:
- Pick the ChatGPT Meetings plugin if you already live in ChatGPT on a Mac and want it to draft emails and plans from what you know together.
- Stick with your current tool if your team is on mixed devices, you need recordings you can replay (this plugin deletes audio), or your CRM is already wired to another note-taker.
Don't run two note-takers at once. Buyers notice, and it's awkward.
The real lesson: follow-up is the job
A lot of deals get lost the same way. The call goes well. Everyone's excited. Then life happens, and the follow-up goes out four days later, or never. The buyer cools off.
A note-taker solves the "I forgot what they said" problem. It doesn't solve the "nobody owns the next step" problem. That's a sales system: clear stages, a follow-up rhythm, and someone accountable for every open deal. Our guide to founder-led sales covers how to set that up while you're still the one closing.

Common questions
Who can use the ChatGPT Meetings plugin right now? ChatGPT Pro and Business users on the Mac app, in beta. Enterprise is in an early program.
Does a bot join my Zoom call? No. It captures audio from your Mac without adding a visible participant.
Does it tell the other people they're being recorded? No. The consent reminder only appears for you. You need to ask everyone yourself.
Can I replay the recording later? No. OpenAI says audio is deleted once notes are ready.
Is it worth it for a one-person sales team? If you're on a Mac and already pay for Pro or Business, yes, as long as you use it to send faster, better follow-ups.
